PREFACE Summer Program – 2014

The Rensselaer PREFACE Program is a two-week residential summer experience for talented high school sophomores and juniors, who will enter 11th or 12th grade in the fall of the coming year and who have expressed a strong, early interest in pursuing a career in the engineering and technological professions. It is for high school students from groups that have been historically and traditionally underrepresented or underserved in science, engineering, and technological fields.

In 2012, Rensselaer accepted 24 students to participate in the two, two-week sessions in July, from over 300 applicants from around the nation. They are exceptional young men and women from 12 states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Maryland, Maine, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia.  Participation in the PREFACE Summer Program provides the student participants with extraordinary opportunities:

PREFACE provides experiences using an engineering process approach to resolve a problem (e.g., design, troubleshoot, innovate, model, revise, and assess outcomes);

Activities, classes and workshops create opportunities to develop leadership and team-building skills;
Students explore career opportunities available in the engineering professions as a means to develop a deeper understanding of the role and expectations of an engineering education;
The PREFACE Program presents a snapshot of college life and its academic, social, cultural, service learning and environmental experiences.
Rising high school juniors and seniors are invited to apply for an intensive summer Robotics Camp offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), and sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

The intent of the camp is to motivate the most creative minds of a new generation of prospective Electrical and Computer Engineers to become global leaders in an increasingly technological world. The program aims to create a community of students who participate in and contribute to an intensive and powerful academic experience delivered by distinguished educators and professionals.

Camp participants will be introduced through a residential College academic experience to the exciting field of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and will learn topics not traditionally taught in High Schools such as Microcontroller Programming, Sensing Systems, Digital Electronics, and more. (click on image to see a photo album from the camp)

The participant will work with Electrical and Computer Engineering students and professors, and interact with professional engineers from the Industry.

TCNJ offers a superior learning environment, and these experiences take place in specialized laboratories.

WHAT IS ROBOTICS?
Robotics is the science and technology of robots, their design, manufacture, and application. It requires a working knowledge of electronics, software, and mechanics. Before the coining of the term robotics, there was interest in ideas similar to robotics (namely automata and androids) dating as far back as 400 BC. Robotics are used in industrial, military, exploration, home making, and academic and research applications. Although the appearance and capabilities of robots vary vastly, all robots share the features of electronic sensors, and a movable structure under some form of autonomous electronics, computer, and software control.

WHAT DO STUDENTS DO AT THE TCNJ ROBOTICS CAMP?
Students will build, program, and use their own robot. Each participant will receive a robotics kit, and at the end of the camp they get to take home their own robot. The Kit provides everything necessary to build an expandable robotics platform. During the process of building their robot, students get to perform a series of activities, which culminate with a robotics competition.
The activities introduce motor control and interfacing your robot to the human world to avoid objects, following light, provide sound and light feedback, and the Roborealm computer vision and robotics development platform and environment in the advanced session.(click on image to see a photo album from the camp – higher resolution images may take longer to load)

A TYPICAL DAY AT CAMP INCLUDES:
·         Interesting electrical and computer engineering sessions each morning and afternoon, and their application to your robot. Hands-on robot building, programming, and utilization facilitated by TCNJ faculty and students.
·         Hands-on utilization of wireless technologies and computer vision and robotics development platform.
·         Site visits to facilities where state of the art electronic and computer technology is being developed, and meeting with practicing engineers.
·         Fun evening activities.
·         (For students attending both sessions only) Fun weekend trip to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor and Great Adventure & Wild Safari .

At the end of the week, a prominent guest speaker from the Electronics/Computer Industry will give a special presentation about their organization and the industry.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Eligible camp participants are students who will be high school juniors or seniors during the 2013-2014 school year, and rank at the top 30% of their class, have an interest in robotics or engineering, and have successfully completed one year of college prep mathematics (preference will be given to those who have completed algebra).

LOCATION & COST:

The camp will be held at the beautiful campus of The College of New Jersey, Ewing, NJ. Participants stay in a TCNJ air-conditioned residence dorm and are chaperoned by electrical/computer engineering students.
Dates to be determined.
(Cost of the camp: $1,696 for a single session and $3,674 for both sessions. All students accepted to the camp will receive a $400 scholarship for a single session or a $800 scholarship for both sessions.)
FINAL TOTAL Cost of Camp*: $1,325 for one session or $2,903 for both sessions. This cost covers the following:
·         non-refundable $29 application fee
·         robot kit
·         tuition
·         educational materials

The College of New Jersey’s Summer Pre-Engineering Teacher Academy is offered to high school rising seniors interested in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) principles in an exciting, relevant, and real-world engineering design environment. This program is designed to attract students to the field of pre-engineering education through exposure to curriculum and practicum experiences that focus on teaching.

A national shortage of technology/pre-engineering teachers exists in New Jersey and nationally. The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and other professional engineering societies have identified as a national imperative the need for students to gain technological literacy, strengthen their interest and skills in STEM principles, and in increasing numbers enter engineering and other design fields. Studies have shown that if students, especially female students, are not provided design and engineering experiences in school, they are very unlikely to consider a technological field of study.

TCNJ’S Pre-Engineering Teacher Academy aims to capture the interests of high school students as an effective recruitment strategy toward resolving this shortfall.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Pre-Engineering Teacher Academy serves as an excellent long-term recruitment strategy to increase the pool of candidates interested in becoming pre-engineering teachers. Benefits of the Academy include:
• Introduction to pre-engineering teaching and the profession.
• Opportunities to meet with distinguished TCNJ faculty, educational leaders, and teachers to discuss issues pertinent to pre-engineering education.
• Participation in creative hands-on pre-engineering activities.
• Experience making a difference in a student’s life.
• Joining other students in an fun and creative atmosphere learning team building exercises, principles of Science, Technology Engineering, and Math.
While on the TCNJ campus, high school students will experience learning as individuals and as productive citizens as they explore new concepts and ideas. Students will experience the profession as they are guided through issues pertinent to pre-engineering education. Students will experience the classroom as they become acquainted with teachers and teaching on a personal and professional level. Working in small groups, students will plan and teach a pre-engineering lesson to groups of middle school students. Each participant will be required to complete all assignments, keep a portfolio, and write a summary report about his/her experiences in the Pre-Engineering Teacher Academy.
PROGRAM ORGANIZATION
Registration will be limited to twenty rising high school seniors. Students are required to attend every daily session. Letters of invitation will be sent directly to participants.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Any student who is taking a college preparatory program with a strong interest in STEM principles, who has completed his/her junior year, and is currently maintaining a GPA of 3.0. Students enrolled in TSA or a PLTW program or NJ High-Tech program or who attends one of our partner schools are strongly encouraged to apply, but it is not a requirement. Applicants must have a desire to learn and grow as a person and in the field of pre-engineering teaching.
